Extensive renovation that transformed San Antonio’s old main library. It began with a complete gutting of the buildings interior. This was followed by precisely cutting through three floors, which allowed for three new elevators, two stair wells and a spacious atrium. Carefully positioned wall openings through the existing brick facade opened it to the light. Well positioned balconies and window walls yielded calming river side views while shaded terraces afforded breeze-way like covered entries. An expansive first floor corridor called an Avenida, runs through the core of the building. In addition to the balconies a third floor terrace was added. To do this a two hundred ton portion of the existing eight inch thick concrete roof had to be removed.
